Enigma Simulator

Designed to provide users with the experience of using an authentic Enigma machine, as faithfully recreated as possible within the confines of a flat screen. On smaller devices like phones, the layout is optimized to utilize the available space efficiently; on larger devices such as tablets, the spacing between keys and indicators mirrors real Enigma machines.

Turning the Rotors:
To adjust the displayed letter, manipulate the serrated wheel situated to the right of each letter by pushing or dragging it up or down to rotate the ring and the internal scrambling wiring.

Pressing the Keys:
Pressing and holding a key initiates three actions:
1. The right-hand rotor advances by one position, with certain configurations causing movement in other rotors.
2. A lamp marked with a letter illuminates in the central portion of the machine, revealing the encrypted output of the pressed letter.
3. The encrypted letter is also recorded on a paper tape located just above the lamps. While most real Enigma machines did not feature a printer, one has been included in this simulator for added functionality.

Encrypting Your First Message:
Adjust each rotor to display a specific set of letters chosen by you. These letters constitute your message key, which should be noted down or remembered for decryption purposes.

If there are existing letters on the paper tape, click the tape and select "Clear" to reset it before starting a new message.

Type a brief message using the keys in the lower part of the machine. While actual Enigma machines required two operators—one to press keys and another to record illuminated letters—the simulator eliminates this need.

Your encoded message will be printed on the paper tape.

Decrypting Your First Message:
Reset the rotors to display the original message key letters. The decryption process mirrors encryption; operationally, it follows a reciprocal mechanism in cryptography terms.

You have two choices: manually read and input encrypted message letters from the paper tape like an Enigma operator would do, or take a shortcut:

• Click "Copy" on the tape to save the printed message.
• Click "Clear" on the tape if desired but not necessary.
• Click "Paste" on the tape for automated input of the encrypted message.

You should now see your initially typed message printed on the paper tape—a successful decryption!

Modifying Simulator Options:
To adjust simulator functionalities, tap on the "ENIGMA" logo at the machine's top right corner for a command menu (also accessible through a menu button) and select "Options."

Machine Settings:
If planning to decrypt an encoded message on another device, both machines must share identical internal configuration settings. To configure your virtual Enigma machine internally, opt for "Settings" from the command menu.

Saving and Loading:
The simulator includes several pre-installed save files containing settings and message keys for various real Enigma communication. Unwanted files can be deleted.

About Screen:
Upon initial installation, advertisements are displayed alongside your machine screen. Accessing "About" from the command menu provides an option to make a small payment for ad removal; this payment contributes to supporting Bletchley Park Trust's efforts in preserving historical sites where Enigma codebreakers like Alan Turing operated during World War II.
